I've used Device Monitoring Studio from hhd software: It allows me to see the comms between my application and the hardware device. It's usually worked for me, but recently, I couldn't get it to make the link. Our application does some extra closing and opening of the port, so that may be the issue. If you're still using RS232 Comm ports, a Keyspan USA-49WG used to be a good option: There's a tab in the application that comes with it that allows you to monitor the traffic thru it.
