I took 131 this summer and just finished. We used a different book (The essentials by Chang or something like that). I hardly used the text book but I used the shit out of David Klein's chemistry as a second language books from amazon. If your teacher suggests them fucking use them! If you don't understand what you're learning get Klein's book. I basically taught myself the majority of basic chemistry from his books. Not really helping you out with your original question but just offering a piece of advice.
Book Preface To the Student As you begin this course, I invite you to think about your reasons for enrolling in it. Why are you taking general chemistry? More generally, why are you pursuing a college education? If you are like most college students taking general chemistry, part of your answer is probably that this course is required for your major and that you are pursuing a college education so you can get a good job someday. While these are good reasons, I suggest a better one.
